Akyaka/Gokova  - A Little Jewel of Turkey

Dramatic mountains rising steeply behind, a gulf of turquoise blue waters stretching out within Gokova Bay and nestled between the characteristic red-roofed, white-washed houses with ornate pine-timbered eaves and balconies strewn with brilliant pink bougainvillea this is Akyaka.

View of Akyaka from the sea

This palm tree lined area has a sandy beach that shelves very gently into the sea, making it ideal for young children. Akyaka is surrounded by forestry commission land on one side and by a conservation area on the other, thus offering superb opportunities for exploring.

Although Akyaka has grown in recent years, it remains a picturesque village. There are no high-rise hotels - any construction has adhered strictly to the traditional architectural style of the region. There are two shopping areas in Akyaka. In the streets behind the beach there are several small shops ranging from mini-markets to souvenir shops. In the old village, set further back from the sea, there are the shops which were originally meant to service the needs of the villagers themselves, the post office  along with the Belediye offices, Jandarms and schools etc.

The "conservation" beach is divided from the village by the Kadın Azmak [woman river] and borders a recognised conservation area. It is not unusual to see otters in the river and the conservation area itself has deer, tortoise, kingfishers, rollers and many other forms of wildlife.

The main attraction for most of the visitors is the natural beauty of Akyaka, with a multitude of species in the wetlands, among those the nearly extinct European Fishotter(lutra lutra), during the winter months different types of herons, flamingos, even migrating pelicans can be observed with some luck.
Akyaka’s meandering little river and its delta are a wonderful habitat for flora and fauna - especially birds and freshwater turtles - and humans can enjoy this natural environment too, dining in one of the pretty riverside restaurants.

The village has numerous food shops and a village bakery which bakes not only delicious bread but also sizzling pide" bread topped with meat and cheese. A permanent fruit and vegetable market ensures you have the best choice of locally grown fruit. There is an excellent choice of restaurants ranging from specialist kebab makers and family run restaurants to the slightly more sophisticated riverside restaurants where fresh water trout is offered alongside a selection of delicious bream, bass and mullet.

Akyaka village became famous for its architecture which was introduced by Nail Cakirhan who won a Aga Khan' award in 1986. The houses are a combination of old Ottoman 'Empire and Greek style and maintains warmth in the winter and coolness in the summer. The original design has altered since and only retains a residue of the original architecture, nevertheless the village is very pretty especially with the abundance and perfumes of colorful flowers.
It is said that because of the springs and many eucalyptus trees in and around Akyaka it makes a very therapeutic atmosphere. In fact many people from Mugla actually retire in Akvaka for health reasons -the air is definitely better!
The beer is not bad either!!!
We hope you enjoyed this site and look forward from hearing from you.
